Presentation by Rod Cunningham, about Philosophy for Kid’s. at the
Education and Young people Special Interest Group. Held at LCATT on 30th March 2014

Rod told us about the history and working of the organisation of P4C.
We were given an idea and summary of the over view of aims, to create informed citizens with the ability to make thoughtful decisions e.g ability to vote mindfully.
To know the difference between arguing and quarrelling.

The way the work is taught/presented,
“ is to create a community of enquiry, this involves the group being collaborative , caring, creative and critical.”
People build on each other’s ideas through dialogue.

We as a group then went through the process; the starting point for our discussion was the Stimulus of the book “ The short and Happy Life of Riley” by ?

Then in small groups we asked questions, made suggestions and formed Hypotheses. Engaged in conceptual exploration, reasoned with each other, evaluate claims and suggestions.

We then watched a video of children working with this type of process, which as very lovely and interesting. Thought provoking for us to see another group that is really up and running in schools, how they have approached the process, food for thought. We also looked at the resources books and books and material used for the starting point of workshops. Interestingly for us John Dewy is a hero of this group too, which might be a very good link for us if we go ahead and work with them. Many thanks to Rod who created a lively workshop and was also very keen to know more about our work and collaborate in the future.
